In the above links I chose to share two pictures of the annotation styles I believe worked best for me. I chose to highlight strong claims or quotes that I believed were important. I also underlined supporting information or put brackets around material I believed could support the claims I am making in my writing. On the margins or the paper I wrote notes to help analyze what I am reading. Similar to that annotation style, instead of underlying supporting material, I chose to circle or box words I believed were important. I believe that the first annotation style of highlighting, underlining, and writing in the margins is the best way to actively read. It helps me to better organize my thoughts on what I am reading and internalize the overall message of the article. Strong annotation practice develops when you find a method that works for you and makes it easier for you to read an article and internalize the information. It is important to annotate when reading because it is easier to go back into the article to find what you are looking for if the main points are highlighted and there are explanations in the margins.
