Preparation for Licensure and Transition to Professional Practice

After taking multiple ATI exams I started to notice some test taking habits I developed that needed to be changed in order for me to do better on exams. I knew that I needed to slow down on each question. I am a fast tester which was a major downfall for me during these ATI exams because the questions are very specific and need to be read and thought about. After slowing down on my exams and reaching the entire question and answer choices I noticed I would do better on exams. My next testing downfall was that I would take this exams in the same room as my roommates because I wanted to spend time with them while doing my work. They don’t have the same major as me so they would discuss different topics while I was trying to focus and it would cause be to become distracted and try to rush to answer each question. After I began taking the exams alone, I noticed I would do much better.

I believe that the ATI remediations have been extremely helpful during this semester. I did find them extremely time consuming and that there was a lot of other work that needed to be done at the same time which caused me some stress. However, in the long run I believe the remediations helped give me little reminders during each exam because I could think back to the short bullets I wrote about each topic I got wrong. I also believe that the book is a great resource for studying as it contains all the information we need to know and more.

I believe that this semester I really evolved my time management skills. I did not procrastinate any assignments and made sure to get everything done before the due date so I did not feel overwhelmed about the workload as much as I normally was. This allowed me to carve out more time for studying periodically during the week and created more time on the weekends for self care and spending time with my friends. I noticed that spending time planning out what I need to get done each day helped me to stay calm and more organized throughout the year allowing me to be less stressed.

I believe in order for me to successfully study for the NCLEX I will need to carry over my organizational skills that I have developed. Creating a weekly schedule that lists everything that I need to accomplish on each day helped me so much during this semester, I have been more on top of my school work than I ever have before. I have never been a bad student but utilizing a weekly schedule has helped me become a better one. Having a schedule will help me balance studying, family time, and time to exercise so I do not become overwhelmed and slack off on some aspects.

Attaining and Protecting Your Professional Nursing License

I intend on getting my nursing license in the state of Massachusetts. Massachusetts is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state. The application can be completed online and requires both official transcripts and verification sign off from the director of UNE’s nursing program. Massachusetts also requires applicants to complete the Child Protective Services (CPS) Background Record Request Form, which is attached to the official application, and upload a passport photo along with the application. The MASS.gov website has various links and handouts on how the application process is completed however, it definitely seems overwhelming. It is important to complete the application process with full honesty and admit to any diagnosed disabilities or potential criminal charges such as OUI on the application. If not, the applicant can face punishment for not fully disclosing the truth. The state of Massachusetts requires all nurses that become licensed in the state to be responsible for reporting any forms of abuse such as child abuse, elder abuse, elder abuse in nursing homes, and abuse of a person with disabilities. There is a document on their website that explains our duty to report any and all abuse. The website also expresses that a fine and disciplinary action will occur if there is a failure to report such abuse. In some instances, such as failure to report child abuse, jail time and potential discontinuation of licensure will occur. Protecting my nursing license is something I need to think about everyday as a Registered Nurse. In order to protect my license I will make sure to document everything I do no matter what to ensure that there is never any question if I administered a medication or preformed a nursing task. I also will ensure that I properly administer medications using the appropriate medication rights and that I waste medications per institutions protocols. Keeping up with new and changing protocols for my institution is also a way to stay on top of things and ensure I am always complying with new updated institution protocols to protect my license. Being aware of completing any required continuing of education assignments that he institution requires and renewing my nursing license on time will also ensure I protect my nursing license.

NSG 447: Prepare for Transition

As my last semester is coming to an end, I am both anxious and excited. College has been an amazing experience, and all the friends I have made in the Nursing program have been with me every step of the way so leaving them to start my career is going to be challenging. However, I know my friends and I will all be very successful! Most of my anxiety is related to taking the NCLEX because it determines so much! I do believe UNE has prepared me so far, and I know I will continue to become more prepared as the semesters continues. Once I begin my first job, I am sure I will be anxious but I know that I will be able to reach out to a more experienced nurse for help if necessary!

I am so excited to start my career! I am looking forward to moving back home where my family is and hopefully being able to work at a hospital close to home, since there are many around where I live! I will be the first grandchild to be graduating college so my whole family is excited for me to enter the world doing such an important job, especially with everything happening today. I plan to celebrate my graduation along with my sister and cousin who are also graduating high school at the same time as me. The three of us want to have out close family over for a nice dinner that my dad will make. We are very close and having a nice dinner is usually how my family celebrates, birthdays, holidays, or something special like a graduation…or three!

I believe the ATI Nurse Logic 2.0 Modules gave me an idea of what information I need to focus more of my time studying in order to pass the NCLEX. It highlighted specific categories the NCLEX focuses on and gave me a great idea on how to organize my time while studying. In order to prepare myself to stay on track with studying, I will make the effort to do one self-care activity a week such as doing a face mask or paint my nails. It is important for me to make time for myself this year because school work and studying is going to take up the majority of my time and I don’t want to be stressed out because then my mind will become clouded and I will not retain the information I am studying properly.
