My thesis statement for my final draft of my social media essay was “creating multiple social media profiles as an escape from real life interactions and problems can be detrimental to the overall self image of those trying to express or find their true selves”. I used a variety of sources to support the claims I made however, Greenfield’s claims were very useful for supporting my thesis. Greenfield states that “social networking has now resulted in three possible selves; the true self, expressed in anonymous environments without the constraints of social pressures; the real self, the conformed individual who is constrained by social norms in face-to-face interaction and, for the first time, the hoped-for, possible self displayed on social networking sites” (Greenfield 117). This quote greatly supports the claim I made in my thesis, which is the main argument of my essay. It is important to use quotes from outside sources to support claims made in your own writing because they add reliability to your essay. After quoting the material it is necessary to explain the quote in your own words to revalidate the quote. Being able to use author’s claims in my essay has not only boosted the credibility of my ideas, but also helps to back up the main argument of my essay. I feel that I have greatly improved on my ability to add quotation and analysis to my essays and work my opinion into the paper as well.
